Lady Chargers Drop TCCAA Doubleheader to Southwest Tennessee
The Lady Chargers hosted TCCAA member Southwest Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon at Eddie Campbell Field, falling in both games of the conference doubleheader.
Southwest Tennessee claimed game one by a final score of 5-3 despite a strong offensive showing from Columbia State.
The Lady Chargers tallied nine hits in the opener, led by sophomore Bella Birdsong who went 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs. Sophomore Haley Gamblin added a big swing at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. Aspen Tipton-Williams was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Emily Copley contributed a 1-for-3 performance.
Copley also took the loss in the circle, pitching all seven innings. She allowed 11 hits and five runs (three earned) while striking out four.
Game two was a tightly contested pitching battle, with the Lady Saluqis edging Columbia State 2-1.
The Lady Chargers were limited to four hits in the nightcap, coming from Bella Birdsong, Aspen Tipton-Williams, Madison Arel, and Sara Craft. Tipton-Williams drove in the lone run for Columbia State.
Sophomore Haley Gamblin turned in a strong performance in the circle despite the tough-luck loss, going seven innings while allowing just five hits and two earned runs, finishing with one strikeout.
The Lady Chargers will look to bounce back this weekend as they compete in the Mid-State Classic at Ridley Park, hosted by the City of Columbia. First pitch against Calhoun CC is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
