Chargers Take Series Over No. 13 Walters State in High-Scoring Weekend
The Chargers baseball team hosted No. 13 Walters State in a three-game series on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4, played at Belmont University. Columbia State claimed two of the three games, including a thrilling extra-inning win and a dominant offensive performance in the series finale.
In game one on Friday, the Chargers earned a dramatic 10-9 victory in extra innings behind a balanced offensive effort that produced 10 hits. Julian Richards led the way, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and three RBIs. Jordan Akins also had a big day, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Jax Nichols contributed with a 2-for-3 performance and two runs, while Holden Warmath added a double and a run scored. Ashton Kemp, Owen Hutcheson, and Cary Burke each recorded a hit, with Kemp also driving in a run.
On the mound, Logan Johnson picked up the win in relief, tossing one inning with no hits or runs allowed and two strikeouts. Noah Taylor got the start, pitching four innings with three strikeouts. Steele Moseley delivered two strong innings of relief, allowing no hits or runs. Nick Bolton and Anthony Serrano also saw action out of the bullpen.
Game two of the doubleheader saw Walters State respond with a 17-5 win. The Chargers totaled seven hits in the contest, highlighted by Isaac Schafer, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. John Carter added a home run, finishing 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Cary Burke and Russ Lambert each doubled and drove in a run, while Holden Warmath also recorded a double.
Tate Riggs took the loss on the mound, with Parker Day and Will Rhodes providing relief appearances.
The Chargers bounced back in a big way on Saturday, erupting for a 23-10 victory in the series finale. Columbia State pounded out 19 hits in an explosive offensive showing. Cary Burke led the charge with a standout performance, going 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, four runs scored, and seven RBIs. Holden Warmath also had a huge game, going 3-for-6 with two home runs, including a grand slam to end the game, along with three runs scored and five RBIs.
Julian Richards added three hits, while Isaac Schafer went 3-for-4 with a double and four runs scored. Ashton Kemp and John Carter each homered, combining for six runs scored and five RBIs. Jordan Akins and Sam Smith also contributed to the offensive outburst.
On the mound, JC Myers earned the win in relief, while Braden Gover got the start. Logan Johnson added another strong relief outing, and Anthony Serrano closed out the game.
With the series win, the Chargers improve to 22-15 overall and 18-6 in TCCAA play. They will travel to Volunteer State on Tuesday, April 7 for a non-conference matchup against the Pioneers.
