Chargers Battle Through Extra Innings, Earn Series Win at Cleveland State
The Chargers Baseball team hit the road for an important TCCAA series against Cleveland State, playing a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 19, followed by a nine-inning contest on Friday, Feb. 20. The three-game set featured tight games, extra innings, and strong individual performances, with the Chargers closing the series on a high note.
Thursday – Game One
In the opener of Thursday's doubleheader, the Chargers came up just short in a 10-inning thriller, falling 5–4.
Tate Riggs delivered a strong start on the mound, throwing 5.1 innings while allowing five hits and two runs (none earned) and striking out eight. The bullpen saw action from JC Myers (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K), Parker Day (0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K), and Logan Johnson, who worked 2.0 innings, allowing one run while striking out five.
Offensively, the Chargers collected seven hits. Julian Richards went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Holden Warmath finished 2-for-5 with a run. Jordan Akins added a double and an RBI, and Owen Hutcheson contributed an RBI and a run. Cary Burke and Sam Smith also chipped in hits as the Chargers pushed the game into extra innings.
Thursday – Game Two
Game two was another close contest, with the Chargers dropping a 3–2 decision.
The offense was limited to three hits, but timely production kept the Chargers within striking distance. Julian Richards went 1-for-3 with a run, Ashton Kemp added a double and a run, and Holden Warmath drove in both Charger runs.
Noah Taylor took the loss despite a solid outing, pitching 6.0 innings while allowing six hits and three runs, striking out seven.
Friday – Game Three
Determined to salvage the series, the Chargers responded with a dramatic 6–5 extra-inning win in Friday's finale.
The Chargers tallied nine hits, led by Isaac Schafer, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs. Cary Burke delivered a key home run, finishing 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Julian Richards added two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Sam Smith and Russ Lambert each crossed the plate, while Ashton Kemp and Holden Warmath contributed at the plate as well.
On the mound, Anthony Serrano earned the win in relief, tossing 3.0 innings with six strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Steele Moseley provided a strong extended effort with 4.1 innings pitched, giving up one earned run and striking out five. Braden Gover closed out the game with 2.0 scoreless innings, while Brayden Whitlow also saw action earlier in the contest.
Looking Ahead
With the series complete, the Chargers move to 5–7 overall and 4–2 in TCCAA play. The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 24, on the road at Wallace State, before coming home for a weekend series against Volunteer State on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.
